ACL in summary
ACL was this past weekend as thousands of music fans stormed into austin demanding a weekend of good music. the weather was probably the best it's ever been of all the 5 years i've gone. still hot at times but 90 degrees is nothing compared to 110 of 2005. i think i took a more laid back approach to this years fest as well. didn't go for as long each day...relaxed in the grass between sets...moseyed around from gig to gig. the music lineup was maybe my least favorite thus far, but i still saw a decent amount of good shows and am not complaining. plus it was kinda nice to not be running back and forth across zilker all day long.
so who did i see? here goes. will hoge, snippets of peter bjorn & john, joss stone, jj grey & mofro, james hunter, rev horton heat, paolo nutini, steve earle, ocote soul sounds, shields of faith, ryan shaw, common, midlake, amos lee, snippets of billy joe shaver, bob dylan.
highlights of the weekend were definitely ryan shaw and shields of faith. shields of faith rotated out 3 drummers who ranged in age from 9-15 and they were all awesome. and besides, who doesnt love a group of older men with amazing voices singing gospel music? another surprise was midlake. eric pulido plays the guitar, keys, and does backup vocals and actually went to a&m. it's exciting to see how successful their band is now after hearing them when they were starting out and playing shows for 20 people in college station. evidently they have the number one album in europe..such rockstars.
bob dylan. hrrmmm. well id be lying if i said i wasnt a bit disappointed. and i think many others share my sentiments. i mean, yeah the guy is old but i dont think anyone was prepared for how old he was going to sound. i think he perked up here and there and some of the songs werent half bad. but then there were the ones where he sounded so scratchy that you were just fearing he was going to clear his throat and either cough up a lung or possibly keel over and die. he ended the nite on 'like a rolling stone' and the weekend was over.
so i give the fest a B-. but overall a good time, pretty good weather, unbeatable people watching, good food and drink...speaking of drink... id like to give a shout out to box for the hookup at sweet leaf tea last nite. i walked up expecting to just buy a cup o tea and be on my way. but upon seeing ben behind the counter i somehow left with 5 cups, 7 bottles of tea, and an ice cream bar. thank you, box.
so ACL has come and gone, so now what? look forward to 2008, of course!
