what do you get when you take a little girl from korea, adopt her at 5 months, and raise her in a white family?
me. here are my profound thoughts. enjoy them.

i could die happy...

yesterday was my day 'o' pete yorn and it was FANTASTIC. it started at the in-store performance at waterloo records. pre-ordered his new album, nightcrawler, thats coming out in august. got his westerns ep with 6 great songs for free. pete came out and played about 5 songs. got him to sign my ticket receipt and got a pic with him. went to the parish and heard a GREAT set mixed with old stuff, new stuff, and some covers. some were acoustic, some with a band and they were all fantastic. i loved every second. he'll be touring in the fall once the album comes out and i just hope he comes back to austin. we gave him a sold out show so he better! LOVE him.

pete yorn and me!!!

and his good ole autograph
i love me a man that can play harmonica

and sing and play the guitar

where are my overalls?

yes, two posts in one day. can you handle it? things were a bit nutty here at work so i didnt have a lot of quality posting time, bc yes, i do most of my blogging at work. great job i have. anyways, things have slowed down for a sec giving me an opportunity to take up more of your time. and just so you know, i typed "slown" in that last sentence the first time. slown...is not a word.

so my parents bought a new house, like yesterday i think. not new in general, but new to them. and so not new that theyve decided to basically tear it all down and start all over. yeah, they learned that they can save lots of money by doing demolition themselves. its like extreme home makeover without ty, paul, michael, the bulldozers, and a crew of 500 people. so who gets to do demo, you ask? yours truly. and her trusty team comprised of the sister, brother, and brother-in-law. and i guess berkeley and ellie but really what good are a 3 1/2 yr old and a 6 yr old? theyre gonna be pickin daisies in the backyard the whole time. so yeah, my parents drafted us kids, or rather told us we had no choice, to do all the demolition to the house before the real workers come in and make it all pretty. my mom emailed us a list of what needs to be done and lets just say it was lengthy enough that there was a lot of page scrolling required. some of my favorites were "take down wall in kitchen," "take out dropped ceiling in kitchen," "remove all baseboards from entire house," "pull all wallpaper off all walls," "remove every cabinet in house," etc, etc, etc. and by "favorites" i mean not looking forward to at all, and by "etc, etc, etc" i mean 12 other bullet pointed duties. so yeah...cant wait for that to start!

oh and maybe youre wondering why my parents bought a new house? well you see...we moved to good ole georgetown, home of all retired persons in texas, back when i was in college. evidently mom and dad didnt realize how much crap they had and moved into a house not quite large enough to hold everything. thus, the desire to move 5 years later. heres the best part though...theyre moving in literally across the street from my sister and her fam. and my sister evidently thinks this is a good idea. i mean, it will be great for the grandkids to be able to run across the street and see gma and gpa. shoot...free babysitting! i personally cant help but have episodes of everybody loves raymond go through my head though. if you dont watch that show then that will mean nothing to you. anyways, so i guess everyone involved thinks its a great idea...and just as long as they dont expect my brother and i to move in on either side of them then i guess i think its a great idea too.

oh and for some more fun...theyre planning on getting a pool too. no, we dont have to dig the hole for that...at least as far as i know. i have ALWAYS wanted a pool and now they get one? its my parents crafty way of keeping us kids close. hey whatever works...i will be there opening day with my floaty.

i will keep you posted on demolition. my family in close quarters for days at a time armed with tools - guaranteed to produce some good stories.

happenins

so today is the nba draft. kinda exciting although probably 1% if the people that read my blog share my enthusiasm. the top pick will probably either go to gonzaga's adam morrison, texas' lamarcus aldridge, uconns rudy gay, lsu's thomas or some italian dude. and although morrison has the dirty white guy moustache thing going on, he's kinda my favorite. maybe its the underdog appeal - looks wise, that is - he's a great basketball player. i did pick the zags to go all the way in my bracket though...halfway bc i just like saying 'gonzaga.' so anyways, the draft is tonite. last years was a little more exciting bc a&m's own antoine wright was in it and got drafted by the nets. didnt play a ton of minutes this year but there's always next year right? so yeah, the anticipation isnt quite as high for me although i will be excited to see who the sixers get with pick 13. hopefully someone that can help that dang team out...

something of more importance to me tonite though will be my love, pete yorn. he's making his tour through the US and has a little stop in austin tonite. i couldnt be more excited. he might be tied with ryan adams as my favorite so im just hoping he doesnt let me down. i doubt he will though. its an acoustic show and should be pretty sweet. if hes within five feet of me at any given part of the evening i might just ask him to marry me...ok i wont really...i dont wanna be that girl...but i will be thinking it in my head.

so i go to good ole chi-town in SIX days! wahoooo!

fun times with the bakers!

i had some weekend guests which is always fun. more people should come visit me in austin (hint, hint). anyways, jen and joe came in town on sat. for a wedding they were goin to on sunday. fun times all around. got some dinner at hula hut bc its pretty much required to me that you go there if youve never been. thats about it though. oh and joe is in a band thats gonna be huge someday. i cant disclose the name of the group yet, but just keep waiting and once they go public youll be the first to know.

so about jen and joe. i really enjoyed hanging out with them. theyre a great couple bc they dont make you feel like you're with a couple. when i hung out with them i felt like i was hanging out with jen and hanging out with joe, but not like i was hanging out with joe and jen, the couple. does that make any sense? i mean you can definitely tell that they genuinely care about each other but they also didnt have to be all over each other or mushy and i liked that. it was almost like they were really good friends and happened to be married too. that might have sounded insulting but i really mean it as a compliment. theyre the type of couple i want to be when im married. and i guess that comes from the fact that im real anti-mushiness, anti-pda, anti-super cheesy pet names. there might be a time and place for that but i dont think it should be around other people. but thats just me.

so i guess that was kinda random but its a change of pace from hearing about tv shows all the time right?

ramble, ramble, ramble

here is what has become my normal friday post of unrelated ramblings about stuff.

ive recently discovered that im obsessed with smells. well maybe not discovered but noticed and accepted the fact. maybe i have a hyper-sensitive nose or something. i dunno...sometimes i think of which sense i wouldnt mind losing. that is, if i had to...id actually like to keep them all. i think it would be smell. you wouldnt ever be affected by bad smells anymore...unless of course that bad smell was yourself and then you wouldnt know. that could be bad. just something to think about. i think sight would be the hardest to adjust to losing, hearing the most detrimental/dangerous to lose, taste the saddest to lose bc of my overwhelming love for food, and touch the most missed for me...i like to touch EVERYTHING. im happy to be at an age where i dont go shopping with my mother and dont have to hear the ever repeated, "katie, stop touching everything!!" now its probably just the employees saying that to themselves as they watch me.

so the mavs LOST in the nba finals on tues nite. theres controversy as to whether the officials favored d wade and the heat blah blah blah but is the win ever fair to the losing team? so congrats to d wade and especially some of his older teammates who have played for years and never got that championship ring. the mavs are a good, young team though and arent going anywhere. so stop your cryin mavs fans, theyll be back next year.

a couple of weeks ago it was announced that damien rice pulled out of ACL fest and i forgot to mention it. a huge loss to me as i was very much looking forward to seeing him especially since i cant catch his show with fiona here in austin in a couple of weeks. something about him wanting to go back to the studio earlier and thus cutting his time touring short. whatever the reason, its still disappointing. he was replaced by a group called muse who is supposed to be "the next radiohead" type of group. not a huge radiohead fan so my response... *yawn*...

im still watching "so you think you can dance" and still LOVING it. last nite joy and eric? went home. there are two guys and they look like they could be brothers and i dont really know either of their names. my favorites are still donyelle/benji and travis/martha so i guess i dont care so much about anyone else at this point. check it out on wednesdays if you still havent.

im going to the windy city in about 10 days. pretty excited about that. if you want a chi-town souvenir let me know. i say that but probably wont be coming back with much besides pictures so i guess tell me if you want me to get you a picture of something?

ok ill stop with that...save some ramblings for another day.
have a great weekend everyone!!

the birds and the bees

so here's a story from the weekend. and it has to do with my family. my nephew berkeley is 6 and he's starting to learn about his body. and evidently last week he was obsessed with my sister's (his mom's) boobs. not like in a gross way, but in a, im 6, curious, and dont know any better, type of way...i guess...i didnt ask for details. so anyways, my sister got him some kids books from the library about body parts and boys and girls etc. so i guess my mom is over at her house and my sister is showing her the books before she gives them to berkeley. well my mom is like, maybe when berkeley is done with these you can give them to kate because we never really went over that stuff with her. my sister says, um im pretty sure kate has figured it out by now. of course my mom was joking about giving me the books but its true that we never got to have "the talk." and honestly i feel quite blessed to have avoided that morbidly embarrassing time with my parents. funny that they were quite aware that they left me in the dark though. i guess they assumed i would figure out all i needed to know from friends, movies, and whatever else and just prayed it wouldnt be personal experience. and now, working at the medical institute for sexual health i have definitely heard and seen it all and have become quite desensitized to everything. so i guess in the end it all balanced out, right?

a great 3 days

well the weekend started off right as you probably could have guessed from the previous post. the game was a lot of fun. im not even a huge astros and/or clemens fan but you couldnt help but be excited from all the energy of everyone else there. and then topping it off with seeing lance and matt - faaantastic! and some people dont see the appeal in matthew mcconaughey for some reason but man, even from 100 feet away...lots of appeal. so yeah...thanks again to casey for asking me to go with you!!!

saturday i watched some golf...because thats what i do now. saw some of the world cup action and got to witness the italian guy scoring our only goal of the game for us. um, thanks? sat nite i saw nacho libre - the nap. dynamite-esque comedy about mexican luchadores starring jack black. there were some mixed reviews but i thought it was hilarious. and maybe im just real easily entertained but i felt like i was almost laughing continuously. some great quotes, for sure.

last nite was game 5 of the nba finals. an important game for both teams and d wade's two final free throws in OT sealed the win for the heat. it was awesome. no, i am not mavs fan which i know is real hard for some people to grasp but whatever. so now the series comes back to texas for game 6 and either the heat need to just win one more or dallas needs both wins which is quite probable since the heat havent won any games in dallas all season. so we'll just have to see.

that's it for your weekend update.

a nite of great men - be jealous

it was a nite to remember....
roger...
clemens...
lance armstrong...
and matthew mcconaughey.

what more could a girl ask for?

two things

id be lying if i said that this game wasnt fun and kinda addicting. well...basically any mindless, time-wasting activity is fun to me at this point.

second, if you like cheetos then you should try baked cheetos. they pretty much taste the same and are better for you. so, just in case you were wondering, now you know.

the weekend hooray!!!!!!

oh what a sweet feeling to know that it's friday. im still wondering how i made it through this week that felt like a year. just one of those slow weeks and im so grateful that its over...well, almost.

the weekend should be good. tonite casey and i are going to the round rock event of the year - the express are playing with a special guest appearance from roger clemens. should be fun and theres fireworks at the end - you cant beat that.

sunday is my family birthday celebration...only a month late but whatever. we'll also be joining it with fathers day festivities. this is all of course if my family is all healthy which we've all learned is an incredibly challenging feat.

have you heard of last.fm? well its pretty cool. its kinda like yahoo shoutcast radio. one big and better difference is that you basically create your own radio station to listen to. you can put in a list of groups and artists you like and it will automatically generate a station for you. you can then choose whether you like or dislike the tracks and it will modify your station accordingly. if you click on the link to the right under my "listening to" sidebar you can actually see the last 10 tracks ive listened too. it has a lot of other features as well that im still discovering. anyways, its great for streaming at work.

Thursday, June 15, 2006

now THIS is crafty

soccer...it's for the birds..

what a ridiculous story. seriously, we're spending our time teaching crows to play soccer?

you have got to watch this

ok if you arent watching 'so you think you can dance' on tv then you really should start. this show is great and there is NO way that you can watch it without being entertained. if you can then i might question what kind of person you are. i guess if you had absolutely no interest in dancing but i would hope thats not the case. anyways this show is done by the same people that did american idol and the setup is similar. 3 judges, america voting, people go home every week. one thing thats different is that america votes but then the bottom 3 couples go into this sudden death type of round and then the judges ultimately choose the loser. so america doesnt have total control.

reasons you should watch this show: well, for one, the dancers are just incredible. and what i find even more amazing is that they audition for the show and they generally have a specialty. some are ballet dancers, some hip hop, some jazz, etc. but then they get partners and are taught a dance in a specific genre for the week ranging from the mambo to 80s disco to hip hop (and yes, the hip hop routines are definitely my favorite). and sometimes the genre is completely opposite from what they're familiar with yet they come out and are absolutely amazing. and i guess thats what truly makes a good dancer - someone that can dance any given style thrown at them. anyways...my two favorite couples from last nite were benji/danielle and martha/travis. hopefully they wont be in the bottom three.

so the show is on wednesdays for two hours and then the hour results show is on thurs. as more and more people go home im sure it will go down to an hour and half hour. so check it out - you wont regret it!

sweating...

evidently not just a hobby of mine. i was reading austinist.com and came across a blurb about some list that old spice comes out with stating the top 100 sweatiest cities. well its no shocker that 6 texas cities fall in the top 10. austin is 7 in case you were wondering. and really what is the point of such a list? we know its flippin hot and we know we sweat - why you gotta rub it in and make a list out of it? maybe old spice is hoping that this will bring some awakening to them texan men and then theyll go buy the deodorant? anyways...if you live in texas and youre outside then youre probably sweating. i think thats pretty much what it proved. genius.

we may be sweaty, but at least we're smart.

so about work. part of my everyday morning routine at work consists of going to the kitchen, nuking some water to create my delicious instant oatmeal and then getting a styrafoam cup of water. well...this afternoon i picked up my beloved styrafoam cup and proceeded to take a nice big gulp...looked down and saw my friend, the ant, swimming around. for all i know i swallowed his sister. did i get up and replace the water? surely..not. is that any indication of how lazy i am? i just continued to drink my water as mr ant kept swimming around.

as far as other 4 legged friends...wait...do ants have six..or 8? crap. anyways. outside my window this afternoon were some frolicking deer. i only saw the ma and baby today although in previous days ive seen other adults. but this baby deer is flippin cute. its probably 16 inches high or so...maybe about the same in length...looks a lot like this one in the
pic although thats not actually the one i see. and it runs around and i just wanna go outside and catch it and take it home! no, this wont ever happen for real. instead i will continue to enjoy bambi's fam outside my window. just another thing to keep me distracted from what im supposed to be doing. wait...what am i supposed to be doing again?

life on the lake is grand

the highlight of the weekend was definitely getting to hang out with heather and steve at heather's grandparents lake house. the water was a beautiful blue/green and although the water level was considerably low, there was still enough of it to float in! we got to feast on some very tasty fresh fish caught by grandpa himself as well as plenty of fries, salads, cake and ice cream to feed an army. it was also like a dog farm out there...3 dogs and an adorable little puppy. after lunch we got to lounge in some floats in the cove and catch the waves that the boats created as they went by. it reaffirmed my utmost desire to live on the lake one day. even if it doesnt happen till im 50 or so its ok...just as long as i end up out there one day bc nothing beats life on the lake if you ask me. ive added some pics to my site recently including a few from the lake..check em out here if you wanna.

the rest of the weekend was pretty normal. sleeping in...working out...some good tv time. my newfound interest in golf got some attention on sunday and my boy adam scott did quite well. lots of sports goin on right now...you got golf, the world cup, the nba finals, tennis, baseball...i feel like the only thing not going on is football. the first US world cup game is today against the czech. the mavs are up 2-0 against the heat who will try to redeem themselves at home on tues in game 3. so theres that.

oh my family and i didnt celebrate my bday like planned. yeah, my family cant get their immune systems together so the celebration keeps getting postponed. we're gonna shoot for this weekend and join it together with fathers day fun. hopefully everyone will be healthy but at this rate im not holding my breath.

now its time to get a little work done. our big national meeting in chicago is happening in about 3 weeks and so the office is a bit crazy now with everyone running around like headless chickens. kinda makes it exciting though.

thoughts and things

its friday. hallelujah. i go to chicago in 24 days. disneyworld in 63.

they say ignorance is bliss. to the ignorant person maybe. to others, annoying. trust me. ive worked with customers for over 7 years and my faith in the intelligence of an average human being has gone WAY down.

if money grew on trees how much would you pay for a tree? and how can there be debt when we make the money. and i mean make as in create as in the US mint, not as in earn.

i had said earlier that i would try out some of the upcoming ACL artists and tell you about em. right now im liking david ford, anathallo, and alexi murdoch.

this weekend im finally celebrating my bday with my family. talk about anti-climactic. and with every family birthday party that involves my neice and nephew, party hats ARE required. thats something to look forward to.

ive learned at work that im a good proofreader. i might even say great. well, not when it comes to grammar necessarily but i can catch spelling errors like its goin' outta style. i attribute that to being an excellent speller in my younger years and even participating in a few statewide spelling bees. and im not sharing that to brag...moreso to provide another outlet to make fun of me in. and with that im guaranteed to have a spelling error in this blog somewhere or in the future. its cool though..no one is perfect.

i need more money. anyone have any good ideas of ways to make some side income besides lemonade stands and prostitution? let me know.

ok theres your friday ramblings...

have a great weekend, alright?

that bird flu

so...on tuesday we had staff lunch here at the office. the ceo started talking about how he had met with some people from CDC (centers for disease control) recently and they talked about the bird flu. that wasnt the primary purpose of meeting but it just came up in conversation at some point. and i probably dont have all the specifics exact but this is generally what he said...

evidently the bird flu is not far from us. right now, in the US, its just passed bird to bird and the real problem will arise when it starts getting transferred bird to human and then human to human. they (CDC) estimate that this could happen as quickly as a month away. thats july. at that point they say its going to take a major toll on our economy bc airports, sports arenas etc. will have to be shut down - basically any place that serves mass amounts of people. and then once it starts spreading its going to get 40% of the people or something. and then once it hits humans it will take at least 6 months to create the vaccine for it. and even then, the vaccine will be in very short supply and will not be easy to get ahold of -especially for everyday people like ourselves. like i said, all these "facts" are what i heard so who knows how true they are but the CDC is pretty legit. and that might all be worst case scenario type theories. even so, i think the problem is still going to arise in some way.

so i was talking to my friend christian about this and we were discussing what we need to do. her idea - take lots of vitamin c and shots of wheat grass to get our immune systems in tip top shape. my idea - buy a bubble suit. or just a bubble like that movie 'bubble boy.' i didnt actually see this movie but i remember seeing pics of some kid wearing a big bubble and thats what i envision to be our best option. im not sure how that works as far as getting into your car or even sitting at a desk but im sure some smart people can figure that out.

ok so yeah...dont take the bird flu as a joke...those dang birds are gonna get you!

well its better than iowa..

you might remember back in february when i shared a list of places i evidently wanted to go to for a family vacation if i had my choice. its important to know that this list was formed when i was 10 years old. some of the favorites were the animal shelter and iowa despite not knowing a soul there. you can read the post here if you want to be amused again.

anyways, family vacations dont happen often in our family but the occasion this year is my parents 40th anniversary and they want to celebrate by treating all the kids and grandkids to a vacation. doesnt make a lot of sense but like im complaining. so..it has been decided that we are all going to disneyworld for a week...in florida...in august. is anyone elses first reaction," gosh, thatll be hot!" bc that was definitely mine. and you gotta know my family to be entertained by this. my family is OBSESSED with disneyworld. this will be the 3rd year in a row that my sister and her family have gone and will be my parents THIRD time to go within a 15 month time span. um, hello my parents are in their 60s and act like 5th graders. i guess its kinda cute that they are still youthful like that and its not like they spend the whole time rushing around to ride all the rides - theres evidently a lot more to do at disneyworld these days. still, its just kinda weird. oh, and to further show my family's enthusiasm...i think it only took about 2 days for the flights to be booked, travel accomodations made, and the entire week itinerary made. and its only june.

so all to say...i guess im excited. not nearly as excited as anyone else in my family but maybe ill get there. or maybe after i get to take part in the fun ill see what all the hype is about. i imagine riding some rides, hugging some lifesize furry characters, and watching some fireworks shows or something. however those are the only memories i have from the last time i went back in middle school. i have a feeling things have changed a bit. lemme know if you want me to get you minnie mouse's autograph.

come back weekend, come back...

monday. back at work. wish it was friday.

the weekend was great. friday i saw the breakup which stars vince vaughn and jennifer aniston. i thought it was pretty entertaining. after talking to some other people who also saw it and had unfavorable reactions i realized that it might be hard to watch if you have undergone a bad breakup. i myself have been lucky enough to not have experienced that so i was able to separate myself from the story and not get emotionally involved. however the movie is quite realistic in how men and women can act under those circumstances and might be hard to watch without feeling like youre re-living it. so theres my disclaimer for ya.

i got my haircut and almost have some bangs. not completely bc that wouldnt be my desire but its a little shorter around my face than normal and kinda falls in my face...but i like it. and i love haircuts...i would go every week if i could. laid out on saturday - first time of the year and i got a little crispy. itll turn into a tan soon enough but right now it hurts a wee bit.

oh, so this is interesting. i like golf now. just on tv so far which is sooo weird. for 24 years of my life i couldnt understand why anyone would want to put themselves thru the absolute misery of watching golf on tv. but for the last few weeks i cant seem to pull myself away from the tv when its on. i honestly dont even have an explanation for myself either. but a few weeks ago i was watching it and couldnt stop...yesterday i watched for a good two hours. is this a sign of me getting old and boring? i even have a favorite player already. his name is adam scott. he's australian, 25, easy on the eyes, and he's goood.

the nba finals are about to begin. its miami heat against the dallas mavs. i love myself some d wade but i fear my dallas friends might disown me if i pull for miami. what to do..what to do...first game is thursday.

alright, back to work..

hmm..

these past few months i havent blogged about anything with huge depth or heavy significance. 80% of my posts center around reality tv or music. not that thats a terrible thing - its not like im the only person entertained by those two subjects so hopefully its not completely useless reading for you. if anything i can hope that my sad obsession and addiction to terrible tv shows is entertaining to others? and on that note i watched the first ep of 'the hills' last nite (laguna beach's side project highlighting a former cast members life in LA), and really started to question how old i was and what i was doing watching a mtv reality show about rich kids 6 years younger than me who probably spend my years salary in a month.

but then i started thinking of what i used to write about that didnt involve a tv show or musical reference. and it occured to me that what i used to write about was stuff that im actually happy im not writing about anymore. last year i was wondering why none of my friends from college came to austin and instead moved to dallas, houston, ny, or colorado. last year i was wondering if i was going to find a good church. last year i was wondering if there was something wrong with me and why the heck was making friends so hard? last year i was wondering about every 2 weeks whether or not i was going to walk into my boss' office and say "i quit." last year i was wondering if austin was where i was supposed to be bc it sure was hard to be here...

this year im more than happy to be in austin and love so much about this city that i could go on forever. this year i have great friends whom i love and appreciate. and they might not be my 'old' friends but that doesnt make them any less significant - they're just new. this year i am happy to say that i go to austin stone community church regularly and am in a great weekly community group. this year i joined a gym (something i thought i would never do) and actually look forward to going (something i thought id never say). this year i cant say that i love my job still but for once im content with being here. my time is occupied a lot more with new responsibilities and i get to go to chicago for a week in july. this year ive decided to stop talking about how much i love photography and actually start trying to learn more about it. this year as well as last ive grown to appreciate the importance of family and have really enjoyed the chance to see my parents and siblings and neice and nephew on a regular basis. this year...i know my life is here and thats where i want it to be...and life is good.

so yeah...the seriousness level of my blogs might have gone down a notch over the past few months. but looking back...thats a great thing.

have a great weekend!

so...

..you think you can dance...

this is a new found joy in my life. yes, this is a tv show. shocker, i know...me...talking about a new tv show. i really do other things besides watch tv, i promise.

but anyways...i had heard of the show but didnt know what i was missing out on. i think this is only the second season. think american idol except with dancing instead of singing. its just amazing. and by amazing i mean so incredibly bad sometimes you just dont know if its true. since its the beginning of the show, its all auditions and man, some of these people are real terrible. and i love it. some of them however, are incredible and i like watching that just as much.

so check it out if you have a chance...it was on last nite and is on again tonite for 2 hours so im not really sure when it actually comes on.
